Nick Morana has been with Oakland County FC from the start. Through the highs and lows, he never stopped believing that this small semi pro team could make it up to the top level in Michigan club soccer. This past year, Nick had to take on a lot more responsibilities that he did not have to experience in the past. In the 2016/2017 season. Nick took on the role of being the head coach for Oakland County FC. With being the head coach, his main responsibilities were running practices and recruiting/signing the best players he could to take the team to the next level.
This was Nicks first year being a head coach, so the whole process was a learning experience for him. He surrounded himself with a very good team of employees that took a lot of the pressure off him. Along with being a coach, Nick was responsible for the marketing management of the club. This goes from advertising all the way up to gameday operations. He also helped with the budget management and allocation for the club.
Nick expressed some of his favorite parts about working with the club was the he could be around soccer all the time. Nick is very passionate about soccer. He also likes sports and all the advertising that needs to be done to make a successful organization. He also mentioned that he loved being able to explore and travel when the team went on away trips and such. Some of the dislikes the came along with the job was long hours and time away from home. When you are working with sports you lose a lot of family and friend time because you are always at work.
As far as hours within the work week goes and the attire at each job varies. 20 hours of Nicks week went to coaching and the attire for that was business casual, but often at practices it would be athletic wear. When he was not coaching he was working a full-time advertising job (40 hours per week). The attire for that job would be business casual. The pay for the job was a full-time salary. Holiday time/ vacation time was paid for. Health insurance was covered as well. His previous education is his MBA which he acquired from Oakland University. His relation work experience was Account Executive (MXM), and being a Co-Owner of San Marino Soccer Club.
Nick salary ranges from 60k-100k. The turnover for his type of job tends to be high due to the numerous opportunities at hand. Things could change in a split second and he must always be ready and on top of it. There is always opportunity for advancement, it just depends on how much the person wants to put into their profession to get to the higher position. His tip for students aspiring towards the similar position was to not stop networking and to not stop learning and growing. The more you know about the industry, the better position you will be in the future.

All social media responsibility for the club starts with Ben. His main responsibilities with Oakland County FC is overseeing the social media management. This means that what gets uploaded on the teams Instagram, Facebook, Twitter must be approved by ben first. Ben is responsible for marketing management, budget management and allocation, partnerships and sponsorships, and game day preparation.
Ben explained that there are a lot of things that he liked about being a Co-Owner of a semi pro soccer club. The first is that he gets to be around soccer all the time. It is not often that a young man is the owner of a semi pro club, so it is important to enjoy every moment. He also expressed that he loved being able to travel to different locations and play different clubs all over the United States. He dislikes the long hours that is required with the job. Ben is probably the busiest employee that the club has because he has the most responsibilities and obligations.
The general hours for work throughout the week is business casual (40 hours per week). Ben gets paid a full-time salary, gets paid time off as well. This includes vacation time and holidays. Heath insurance is also covered through his job. Ben got some college experience from Northern Arizona University. He has past experience in customer service, Sports Marketing through General Sports and Entertainment which is located in Rochester Hills, MI.
Ben’s salary ranges from 30k-60k. Turnover is high. Interns and volunteers during the Summer while Ownership Group operates during the year. They are working towards opportunities to retain more year-round staff. There is defiantly room for advancement with the organization. OCFC is also interested in expanding the coaching staff and having interns transition to paid positions. Both of which will be accomplished for 2018. Bens main tip for students that were aspiring towards the same position is to not stop expanding your network and don’t be afraid to over apply to companies.

Theo’s main responsibility for the club is managing finances and operations of the team year-round. He oversees what the club spends its money on and calculates how it will get distributed throughout the organization. He likes how the club is complete freedom, and the flexibility to network with almost any other entity to grow the organization. Also, to meet many influential people along the journey. The dislikes of the job are many unpaid hours, constant uncertainty, expensive startup with no profitable guarantees.
Theo expressed that his mind works all day every day with some level of attention given to the business so exact hours is hard to estimate. He can wear anything he wants if it’s not unprofessional or a distraction to the people within the organization. Pay will come when the organization grows enough to become profitable. Some of the perks are that he gets to have talks with the mayors and other high up leaders of the community on a regular basis.
Theo has some college experience but the fact that he did not finish school did not hinder his ability to add value and insight to the business. He has never owned a soccer team of this caliber before but have helped build one of the most successful amateur teams in the region prior to starting up Oakland County FC. His salary ranges from 50k-unlimited. All based on the different streams of revenue.
In Theo’s current position here really is no turnover on his end but there is big turnover when it comes to players and interns. This is because the team is always adding new players to the squad and there is always up and coming interns with the club. Opportunity shows itself here when the team grows its following/ fan base. The more engagement and attendance, the more advancement. Theo said that his main tip for students that are aspiring to work for a sports franchise should never use the word no. They should always jump and take any opportunity that is given to them and don’t be afraid to explore and travel while working with sports.
